OUR AWARD WINNING COMMITMENT!

As taken from The Whitmire Prescription Treatment Quarterly Vol. 9, No. 1, Pg. 5, Pest Management In Action
By William W. Broome Jr.

Steve Dorobiala sounded like the Buffalo, New York Chamber of Commerce as he tried to convince me that Buffalo does not live up to its reputation for snowfall.I must admit that if he is right a lot of us have been misinformed! The first question I asked in my interview with him was, "How do you conduct your pest control business in the winter with so much snow?" Steve answered that their business slowed somewhat, but they had plenty to keep them busy.

Their strong commercial base, which constitutes 40%of their business, and their monthly residential regular service, which is about 60% of their business, continues all winter. Only their one time services and new business tends to slow down. They also use the winter months to repair everything.

Empire State Exterminating was founded in 1982, since then, their growth has been steady through increased business and two acquisitions in 1988.

Jolene Dorobiala is president of the company; Steve is Vice-president and general manager. Jolene manages the office and the finances. Steve manages the operations. They are a formidable team. Steve believes that training is the key to having a successful pest control service. Newly hired technicians are given thirty hours of classroom training, plus about fifty hours of on the job training before they are allowed to go out alone. It takes six to seven months on-the-job before he believes they are fully trained. Even then, he continues his training program of four hours each month for all of his field people. He depends heavily on the Whitmire training aids and educational support. Control programs start with a thorough inspection. In servicing commercial accounts, the technician inspects for fifteen or twenty minutes before he begins his service. This is to locate any infestation, potential trouble spots, or changes in the situation.

Crack and Crevice Treatment at with one of Whitmire's products such as Orthene, is the backbone of their cockroach control program. Voids are treated with Perma-Dust. All treatments are done with precision. As Steve says, "We hunt the pests, find them, and then take them out. We are not interested in just control, we are an exterminating company."

Intergrated Pest Management is taken seriously. Empire State guarantees their work 100% whenever they get customer cooperation with their pest management program, no "ifs, ands or buts" about it. Caulking cracks and crevices reduces the number they have to treat repeatedly. Steve said that one of the advantages of using the Whitmire Prescription Treatment System is the fact that it lends itself to very efficient inventory control. His costs for insecticides are less since he started using the system. It is very evident at Empire State Exterminating that they strive for excellence in everything they do. I attended a monthly training meeting, and was impressed with the quality of their field people, and the level of their training. They demand that their people do it right the first time.
